yep, I fully agree. A belt is only to hold your pants up. Now lets work out., and why I'm at it, need any training manuals?

Belts have a place in the dojo particularly when working with children. Children need the feedback and sense of accomplishment that a belt provides. Although I do not personally award children black belts.
The belt should never be the goal, but rather the effort and achievement that the belt symbolizes should be the goal. You should also plainly state that all belts are not the same. Your belt=your effort and not your ability relative to anyone else’s. I would also explain that outside the 4 walls of your school the belt means nothing, because there is no equivalence in belt structure from one school to the next (at least not necessarily).
Invariably you will be asked "How long will it take to get my black belt?" To which the response should be "That's up to you." If they push the issue just hand them a belt off the shelf and tell them if that is their only goal they can have one with your complements but not to come back until their goal is to be a good martial artist.
Let your students see you wear a white belt from time to time
to further reinforce the fact that you are always a student!

No, it would certainly not help your cause. Would BJJ and Kyukoshin Karate be successful if all you have to do is show up at a class to get a black belt?
Up till the 80s, there were only a dozen of BJJ black belts foreigners outside of Brazil. Even these days, a black belt in BJJ is still very hard to come by.
Don't make it cheap by just "selling" it.

I think that many people don't realise that a black belt is not the goal to work for. After all a black belt in most martial arts means no more than that you are an advanced student in a certain art. I study aikido and our creator, Morihei Uyeshiba, still wore a white belt and hakama while training. As he said it himself: he was still a student and he remained so till his dying day. If a master of martial arts can still be that humble...
we are all student of martial arts and that should be all that matters no matter what colour is draped round your waist

I think its something that you can hopefully learn on the way to it.
Its a goal to give people to start with and then once you start to learn and understand things you may see things differently.
I do have a black belt, its the first belt in kung fu : ) but seriously, im not there at red yet and im not too worried.
My only goal now is to train, any benefits that come from it are secondary.

Sorry Chuck-I have to disagree. There are two many schools and instructors out there with watered down programs that already do that. People tend to work harder and apply themselves more to something if they have to reach a certain goal or standard. Most people over the long term won't work hard, stay with it and just work out if they don't have a specific goal. In this case you are removing one of the primary ones that acts as a motivator for them. I am sure you will find a few people that would stay dedicated, continue to work out, and apply themselves but you would find many more that would fall by the wayside and drop out.

very interesting opinon.. i was estatic when i got my first degree BB, but I would have to say it totally depends on what you're getting into it for.. some do it for fitness, some for self defense, some put their kids in it to learn respect and gain confidence.. I do think it would be bad for business though.. wouldn't be much fun if you didn't have the challenge, and it was just handed to you, unless you were just hardcore about learning and being the best for yourself rather than trying to better your own ego
