My pet cockatiel injured his nail this evening. His nail got caught and partially broke off. He was bleeding quite a bit so I brought him to a 24 hour avian vet. The vet trimmed the nail, stopped the bleeding, and said to watch for signs of illness over the next few days. He told me what to look for but I was hoping someone could let me know what his chances of recovery are. He lost quite a bit of blood but seems to be doing fairly well otherwise. I am just very worried about my "baby".

If the bird seems to be doing fairly well, I'd say the chances are quite good. The injury is relatively minor, and it has been treated by a vet. Just try to keep the bird calm, talk to him to keep his spirits up, and maybe give him a little extra nutrition to strengthen him. If he did lose a lot of blood, he may be a little weak for a while, but he'll recover.

If he is eating and acting normal by morning, and if he hasn't caused it to bleed again, he'll be fine. I would suggest keeping a small container of flour around, because birds bleed out very quickly through their feet. Pack any wound with the flour putting slight pressure on it. The flour will cause the wound to clot. I do not use the conventional stop bleed products on the market because they burn. Whatever he caught his nail on get rid of it. I can't possibly thing of what it was as it's hard for them to do. Also, you should have had the vet check to see if all the nails needed trimmed...they could just have been too long. I sure he'll be just fine. Give a little more vitamins in his food than usual for a couple of days to help bring his strength back up.

As long as his cage is kept clean and the food and water changed often, there shouldn't be any reason for your bird to get sick.

The illness the vet was talking about could be 1 of two things. The first is infection. As long as you bird is in a clean environment, then there;s little risk of that.

The second could be some form of secondary disease/bacteria. If a bird has an ongoing disease that you might not even know about, a slight injury or excess stress could cause it to get outright sick. There's little risk of this though.

well it might be better if you try not letting the bird to move around because if the cockatiel keeps on moving around the birds foot will really hurt and you might want to take the bird to a vet for a few days for like a daily checkup just in case.

Sorry to hear about your baby. I have a pet cockateil and he has had the same injury and he's 15 years old!!! He bounced back within 3 weeks and is fighting fit.

Give him time to recover and he should be fine in no time.

I would say that his chances are very good. You did all the right things.

If he is acting upset or out of sorts try giving him some chamomile tea. It is safe for him, and will calm him down. Get 100% pure chamomile tea at any health food store.

It works for people too !

Good luck!
