Jesus said this about the matter ... and his words seem perfectly in sync with what the Catholic church believes, teaches, and practices today:

Mat 19:10 His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry.
Mat 19:11 Who said to them: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given.

"Mat 19:12 For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mothers womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take, let him take it."

... or LEAVE it.

Everyone has a choice.

how do we know Jesus was celibate? the bible was handed down and translated so many times and changed so many times by people who didn't like what was in it that the "origional" is long gone. I think the hero worship of Jesus is telling those who want to beleive that he was celibate. what would be so wrong for him to not be? why must a man be celibate in the ministry? why would not a wife be a good spiritual suport for him, they are in all faiths but the Cathlic who sticks to the behind the times celibacy thing.

It IS preferred ......for those who have the gift of celibacy.

St. Paul explained this:

1 Cor 7:1-2
7:1 Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good for a man not to marry. 2 But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.
(from New International Version)

1 Cor 7:7-9
7 I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

8 Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. 9 But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
(from New International Version)

1 Cor 7:32-34

32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs-how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world-how he can please his wife- 34 and his interests are divided.
(from New International Version)

Paul said he would prefer for you to be like him and not marry. But better to marry than to burn with lust. As for Jesus, the word says he was tempted in all ways, but remained sinless. He did not marry, and he had to be celibate. Because he sinned not.
