Well, you have said it all: "untrained," "broken all the rules," and the like. Time to study and learn.
You make it big by being GOOD, and learning your craft. There might be some luck involved, like meeting people who can help, but if you are not good, then forget it. Talent and hard work win out.
Get busy. Read, study, draw, paint, do whatever it takes.

I think you have gotten your ideas about what it means to be an artist from bad movies or something. There is not a formula or shortcut to "making it big". You will be extremely lucky to merely earn a living by painting, let alone get rich and famous from it.
You should begin by being extremely honest and objective about your skill level. Look at your question again. If your were to substitute any other creative/skill-based endeavor for the word "paint", what would you say about your possibilities for success? Here's an example:
"How do you make it big as a singer? Is it just luck more than anything? I have about 20 video recordings of myself singing songs I really like, at my favorite karaoke bar. Where do I begin? I don't have much experience, I'm untrained and I just sing what comes from inside of me. I guess you could call it a natural singing talent, I'm actually not really familiar with all the terms, and I can't even read music!. I've probably broken all the rules in the singing book if there's even such a thing. But all my peeps find my voice really interesting, and they don't bullshyt me, or maybe they do. Thx for your help."
How good a singer would you expect this person to really be? Don't say "but that's different." It's not different. Untrained and unexperienced doesn't make you better and purer, no matter what pop-culture stereotypes have influenced your thinking. It's never a good thing to not know what you're doing.
The next step, after your reality check, should be getting your 20 paintings evaluated by knowledgeable individuals who don't know you and aren't your "peeps". They are the only ones who will give you an honest answer about your abilities. I would suggest professors rather than galleries at this point.
You can also enter paintings into juried shows, to see if you win or sell anything. That would be a sign that your work has some commercial appeal.

the 1st artwork I sold was for $20 to a friend of my Art teachers, who where Artist. We took photo so they can show this person.
At the start you more or less giving your art away.
Then i hired out gallery twice for artist starting off. You paid for one or two weeks. The self hire gallery now are alot more in my town. And you would need to make over $1000 to break even.
Make a profilo and take it to a few gallery to look at. One of them might take you on.
But don't except to get rich from it. One artist told me.
Been an Artist is like making a vow to poverty.
Also try seen if an publishers would like your work in a book. Book illerstration can pays $650 because they buy the copy right to the art work.

To see if a gallery is interested in your work, have it photographed, then take the photos in to the gallery and show it to them. Be sure to go to many galleries first so you can select the one that shows work most like your own.
I would recommend you take a few art history classes, and several painting classes to give yourself some background.
Making it big in the art world is a combination of talent, hard work, entering as many contests as you can, and learning how to let your work evolve, as the art world evolves. Good luck

You sound very young...and if you are still in school, my advice would be to get involved in your school's art program/classes.
If art is your passion--follow it, be committed to it, learn all you can and evolve into the kind of artist you dream of being.
Making it big in the art world? Not many people achieve that--do you realize just how many people are trying the same thing?
If you enjoy creating art....create it for yourself, for how it makes you feel inside while you're immersed in the studio with supplies surrounding you--paint on your clothes and hands...there's nothing like it. If you have that inner "calling" you know it....

to live comfortably off of selling your art (freelance that is) you either have to be very good and very lucky or you have to be a businessman. selling art is selling yourself. and getting to know people, gallery people, other artists, potential buyers is key to making money. the first thing i think you need is to talk to someone in your area who has connections. a college art teacher could be a good start. you could even start by having shows at more low key and less exepnsive places like coffee shops or bringing your art to art festivals.

Hi,
You already got some fine answers.
Indeed, like most things in life, to make them well and outstand from the crowd, hard work is needed. And lots and lots of preserverance.
Like you, many are going for the same objective and the competition is tough. And I'm one of your competitors.
So, I wish good luck, but of course that I wish more luck for me :-)
Check the Resources page on my website and click on Artbusiness image.
Best regards,
José

There's really little rhyme or reason these days, typically. The fate of traditional artists (as opposed to computer graphics people,) is almost completely in the hands of public opinion.

Do you know anyone that would help you out...like friends in the artworld. apply for exhibit, search online just to see what's out there...and what they want. Get involved with an art organization around your communitie or city.
