can you get ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) after an accident? I have been having trouble focusing and concentrating in school lately. Like i will just space out and not pay attention. Or don't feel like doing anything, I just sit there. I was in a pretty severe accident last january. I was hit by a car, and had a blod clot in my brain. So i had surgery to get it removed. I struggled with homework and things after the accident, but I told the doctor that I am doing okay now. but now im starting to realize that although I feel fine, i'm not sure my learning capabilites are normal because I can't focus. I don't know if I am just lazy and trying to find an excuse, or if this is actually a problem that i need to get help with? someone help please!

well im 16 years old and a junior in highschool. I'm pretty sure i didn't have a stroke. The blodclot was caused from the impact of my head on the concrete, because the car physically hit me. I was running and not in a car.

What you have would be considered symptoms of a Head Injury, whether from the accident, or from the surgery.

Go back to the Dr. get it in writing
Go to your school counselor with the Dr's note
Ask for the modifications you need inorder to make it through your classes (maybe no timed tests, etc.)

Yes. Most ADD is present from birth, but about 5% of cases result from brain trauma. However, an injury to the head can cause lots of other problems that may include symptoms that look like ADD, so it's important to go for a good diagnosis. Your neurologist and a psychiatrist might consult to see if you're safe to try the meds usually used for ADD.

Yes.....it can happen that way....but you could have had a stroke or something else to with a blood clot in your brain. I have no idea what grade level you are or what not, but if you are old enough go see and psychologist or psychiatrist, one of those have medicines for ADD and ADHD. You might want to get an MRI done too, provided you have good health insurance.
