I say WE DO remember. We remember our talents, our skills and our knowledge. We bring with us from past life our personality, which is adjusted to the new situation (environment, family and traumas). We bring our tendencies from past life, too.
We only forget what is irrelevant for our progress. It is not important to remember who we loved, who we hated, how we died, who we killed (for example). That's not going to help us in anything.
Reincarnation is like a diamond being cut; like the wood being carved by the hands of the artist. The pieces left over are not important, but the precious result; the master piece is what matters.

Paul B, not necessarily. I don't kow whom yu are talking about and in what situation, but I tell you we all have had several lives, it is impossible that we were princesses and lords in all of them.

I believe that when God sends us back to this earthly realm (or dimension), that we know exactly what it is we are to work on. However, I don't believe we consciously retain this information...i.e. I believe it remains hidden in the subconscious, and influences our psyche as we live our daily lives.
There have, however, been cases of people who have actually remembered a past life, and can provide information about a country they've never visited, the town they lived in...and right on down to describing the actual house they lived in in this country they've never been to. Most of these are children; obviously because they are closer in years to their past lives than adults are, and because they haven't been effected by things in our culture that encourage skepticism (This is the same with children who see angels).
Here is an excellent link to a doctor who has been doing research on children that have had memories of past lives. His research is nothing short of amazing:

Reincarnation is a reality, and the knowledge of past lives is with us, even though we do not detect it. It influences what mate we choose, who we will have in our lives, and for what reason. The final goal, and the purpose, is to learn how to interact with others in a loving and positive way, and to rid ourselves of anything that keeps us from loving unconditionally. It is when we have learned how to do this that we are no longer required to come back, and may rest in God's care.
Blessing to all.

You got it understood correctly, this is the reasons for living many lives, to learn from our mistakes and build on being the best that God knows we can be. We are very young children learning all the aspects of life, even if we lived ten lives our spirits are still very young compared to eternity. Like picking up a hand full of sand, and every grain rep-presents another life lived and many new things learned, gained knowledge to store into our spirit for the next future life. Perhaps this is the why we need to live so many and be the best that God knows that we can be....to eventually live in heaven for eternity, we would have all this knowledge to get along perfectly, no more fighting, no more hurting, no more arguments, just living in harmony, everything would be on a whole new level....God doesn't want to force us to be good, He wants us to learn it, master it, and than earn it in heaven. This is just my perspective here again.....Perhaps life will always go on as long as heaven lives for eternity, for this reason........ some in heaven may get out of control, I believe if so, they have to go back to live more lives to regain control, more knowledge to learn through experiences. Was not saint Lucifer best angel at one time, gone bad and had to leave. Therefore perhaps there were others as well, some of their memory would of been taking away, although their spirit would have the knowledge gained stored for future use.
There is much more to learn when you keep an open mind, body, and spirit ~!~

It's a lovely concept, and you describe it beautifully and poetically. Seriously, I mean that. It is, however, a concept and not fact. Our souls are precious to God and far too valuable for Him to allow us to continue to reborn in an attempt to progress. Jesus Christ died on the cross so that we can believe in Him and live abundantly on Earth, and when it's all over, we get to live for an eternity in heaven. I'm not as talented as you are with words, but I am glad to have that opportunity instead of coming back to this wretched planet over and over and over again. Just the fact that we only have to suffer one lifetime with relatives and in-laws lets us know how much God loves us.

I think there is some truth here, we have some memories that are not congruent with our lives. Plain fact is none of us know for sure, it's all conjecture. I still can't explain knowing my way around places I've never been.

I want to know why people always remember their "past lives" as being princesses, lords, dukes, etc. Why doesn't anybody ever fondly recall a previous life as a dung-shoveller?

Um, I'd say we don't remember them because they didn't exist, but that's just me. I only say that because there's no credible scientific evidence to back up the existence of so-called past lives.
