I have been advised by my GP not to consume any alcohol for 4 months.Is this enough time?.

My MCV was 105 in May of 06. I too have a raised MCH of 35.6. I found that I had a folate deficiency. I tested on the folate at 2.7 whith a defiency starting at 3.4... I take over the counter folic acid and have seemed to have evened things out a bit. My dr never mentioned alcohol intake to me...lol. Guess that might be why you get more than one opinion...

MCV can go up for a variety of causes. Vitamin B12 deficiency or folate deficiency can do it, alcohol can do it, anti HIV drugs can do it, other things can do it as well.

A trial of the alcohol is a good idea. You may wish to supplement with a daily multivitamin as well.

If you're curious, you might request another CBC in 4 months time to see how the MCV is and to make sure that no anemia has developed in the meantime (one reason to worry about elevated MCV is that it may signal impending anemia).
