Your statement is not quite right.Muslims according to hadith of Muhammad pbuh do not allow to have pictures or drawings of creatures created by Allah the only one God.Muslims who hang the pictures and the painter of those creatures will be asked by Allah to make alive those creatures such as birds, snakes, fishes, cows, camels, horses,
,ants, monkeys etc. They can not do it..Besides that muslims are not allowed to have wood or stone statues in their homes because angels would not go into their houses..It will be considered as other gods.Muslims are allowed to have pictures or drawings of beatiful scenery such as mountain with trees and rice fields etc...

Darwings were invented by Muslims. Read invention of Algebra, Alchemy (chemistry) and biology books by them. Astronomy and geometry was taken by them from very basic and changed to a regular science.
Pictures are allowed in Islam except the naked ones. Word Sura is used which means a shape like statue or idol is not allowed.
When you read hadith that prophet prohibited his daughter to hang curtains with pictures it was only to avoid extra spending. It was teaching to daughters to make lesser burden for the husbands and to seek less for worldly gains and to concentrate on charity for poors and think for the afterlife more. That was a type of prevention from going to more luxrious life and becoming only a worldly man.
As far gods is concerned, it is only for keeping in front while praying is not allowed, and in many circumstances even if it is present there is no problem, just we should not thing about any importance with that picture etc.

In fundamentalist Islam as practiced , paintings or statues , etc. are not allowed for the same reason that Muslim women are not allowed to smile , laugh , speake to males , or show their legs in public . It is the concept of "give them an inch and they'll take a mile " They are afraid that women who do these things might be inching their way towards infidelity or worse . And therefore women who obviously refuse to take an inch are somehow more "godly" and a better reflection on their husbands .The ones who take an inch are looked upon as possible whores . ( Mohammed Ali (AKA Cassius Clay) was encouraged by the Black Muslim Leaders to divorce his first wife because she was a poor reflection upon him because , among other things , she wore skirts at, or even above, the knee .)
This concept extends to paintings , etc. because the fundamentalists feel that appreciating a nice painting of a man , woman or animal is inching towards idolatry .And posibly you are thinking too highly of yourself by trying to inch towards being a creator like Allah if you are creating life forms like people and animals on paper or in other forms .( Statues are particularly offencive because they are more lifelike .) Therefore if you wish to be considered as one of Islam's truest followers you should destroy any such images .
I think this just makes Muslims seem like a bunch of insecure ,scared , weak willed lemmings .
Added : When the Islamics conquored Christian and Jewish towns , they paited over any and all paintings to obliterate the images of people and animal . They did this on framed paintings as well as paintings on the walls of the temples and churches . They also desroyed any and all statuary depicting people or animals .
Silly , Silly , Silly !
Added : Rushjat K , In all honesty , don't you think that is such a big bunch of silly nonsence that the Islamic leader(s) put upon the people ? Can a Muslim really say he believes in this today without modern day people thinking he is either joking , or a madman ?

Pictures are symbols used when praying. This is like assistance to have food for the mind while meditating. We have food for the body in plates and cooked with different ingredients or raw from the tree. A hermit do not require a Picture, Rituals, Mosque/Temples/Church and loud prayers but only raw meditation. We are connected to family life so follow rituals, like going around(Tawaf) the black oval stone with red spots(Hajar ul Aswad) during Haj. This is like Hindu worshipping stone named Lingh and Allah as Shiv. We like to call them Pagan/Kaffre. Prayer involves connecting to almighty energy emotionally. We are emotionally bound by pictures of our ancestors and avoid harming them. There are many incidences where Muslims have revered pictures, as these and every item are created by the help of almighty Allah.

Positioning picture at high and respected places in not allowed because, it can lead to polytheism in long run.
