How can i help my 3rd grader with homework when she is so slow? she had dyslexia (especially with numbers), and maybe i think she shows symptoms of adhd, its so hard for her to pay attention. it took her 4 minutes to do theis problem: 68+41= ? and i even guided her thru every step (okay, what is 8+1?) and it takes her a minute to do simple things like 3+4! she gets alll sweaty and stares at the floor when i try to help her and it gets me really frustrated, but i dont want to give her medication for her problems. that is just sad (to give kids Rit-A-Lin and such which). i feel like yelling and throwing the book but its so hard! pLUS THE PAPER ALWAYS SEEMS TO RIP, OR THE PENCIL BREAK WITH HER. no one can help her (not dad, aunty, grandma, 4th grade OR 9th grade sister). we all get frustrated and it takes her hours to finish one page of math!what should i do? HELP!

If you feel like yelling just think how frustrating it is for her when it's HER that is having the problems.

You getting frustrated does not help her at all. That just makes it harder for her to do anything because she already feels like she can't do anything right. Trust me.

Your school should be willing to help. If they aren't you have to help her yourself or get specialized tutors for her.

www.linguisystems.com has a lot of great material for dyslexia.

Also, if she is having trouble with 3+4 then I would think she needs some help with basic math. This goes beyond dyslexia. Discalcula is a math disability. You may want to look into that.

Math U See is a great program for kids having troubles with basics. Go right back to the beginning and start over again. If your dd doesn't have the basics down, she can't advance far in math.

I pray you can find her the help she needs. She sounds just like my daughter.

If it takes her a minute to do 3+4, then 68+41 is way too hard for her.

You need to go talk to her teacher and explain what level her maths is at. She needs help at her level, not to be struggling to keep up with kids who don't have a problem and filling in worksheets when she hasn't the faintest idea what they mean. It sounds to me as if she needs to go right back to using the counting blocks to help her add up tens and units. If you give her a little heap of items (Lego bricks, teaspoons, it doesn't matter what) does she understand what 3+4 means in terms of items? Can she do it then?

Hi,I ahve a 9 yr old that is in 4th grade. She had the same problems.Still has alittle hint of the dyslexia. But,I took her to a phsyciatrist and they evaled her and yes they found that she was/is ADHD and that she is dyslexic.I felt the same way about meds, but my husband and I talked it over and decided to give it a trial run to see what happens.Well that was about 1 yr ago and shes still on the low dose med of aderall and it has done wonders. Her grade level has gone up so high that shes at the top of her class.THe dyslexia is still there, but not as bad!!Its up to u what to do,but this is just my opinion.I hope things work out for your daughter and yourself.

Find her a specialized tutor that has dealt with dyslexic kids before. It may cost a good bit of money but it will help her out in the long run.

That is a hard one, my 4 yr historic whines approximately having to gain knowledge of her letters, I consider that except your child evidently enjoys college they're going to whine and whinge approximately it perpetually. The high-quality factor you might do is inform them they don't seem to be allowed to speak in a whiney voice round you. That is a rule that I have needed to make, whining is approximately probably the most disturbing sound on the earth, so if my youngsters begin to whine I inform them to mention what they're feeling in a non-whinning voice or do not speak to me in any respect.
