I hear a lot of people are doing this because of baggage being lost & delayed. How much does it cost to Fed Ex skis from coast to coast? (Im in NY, flying to Utah) and is this recommended by anyone?

Already checked out FedEx website for rates, but I'm hoping to hear from people with experience in this. I hear FedEx will actually ship a ski bag with tags on it, but UPS requires a box. Any advice? This is my first time taking skis on a plane.

Fed Ex is horribly expensive. You can check out how much it would cost on their website. http://www.fedex.com/ratefinder/home?cc=US&language=en

UPS is a little less expensive, but still pretty costly.

Unless you need to use your skis (ie. moving, racing or ego), just skip taking them. Take your boots and grab some demos when you get out there.

You save the headache of checking the dang things and you can ride some different planks for a week. With no small amount of luck you'll find your skis or better ones on the demo rack at any ski shop.

Last year I was on a trip and didn't even need my skis. I hit a free demo day at one resort and then dropped $60 for two days of demos from a shop near the resort. In the course of three days I skied on 6 different sets of planks. It was like leaving my wife at home and having six different dates on a weekend.

Your skis won't mind if you cheat on them....your significant other may feel otherwise.

I thought of doing this too, but decided against it because of the cost. Instead I made sure my trip insurance covered baggage loss.

Luckily, this didn't happen and my skis made it, but if they didn't rentals would have been covered by the insurance company.

After my trip I was told that most ski resorts would have covered you at no cost if your baggage was lost or delayed anyway.

Also, I don't know about you but I love my boots and didn't take any chances. I took them as carry-on without any problems.

Have fun!

Sounds like a great idea to me! I think I would check with UPS also. It sure beats lugging the things around and gives you one more piece of luggege to put on the plane. Have a great ski season! I am planning to. Winterpark, Mammoth, Sun Valley and maybe France!

i priced it out several years back and it was going to be about $75 each pair, each way..and that was taking the bindings off to make the package smaller. nt worth it unless you got money to waste. I wound up getting a pair of demos that were the same as my own equipment. it worked out well.

I have done it, after flying in from Australia. Worked well. Greyhound is another possibility but you have to collect from a depot.
