I heard someone tell me that cell phones go back a lot longer then the 80's and 90's, that the military had a cell phone maybe as far back as the Vietnam War or before that. I dont know how advanced it was, but it was supposedly what they today are based upon.
can anyone confirm that for me?

cell phones as we know them werent developed until the late 80's when battery technology was able to catch up with the designs...suggest you look at some of the cordless phones of the early 80's...how big they are...remember the bag phones in cars?..it was all related to the battery...those bag phones were the state of the art in the late 80's...the designs were there in the 70's but the ability to build them wasnt...

The phone you describe was a satellite phone which preceeded the cell phone for wireless communication. During WW II, the army had the walkie talkie, made by Motorola. Even aircraft of that era was able to communicate with the ground, via Motorola communications devices.\
I don't recall cell phones with any efficiency prior to 1985. I could be wrong about that date. I had a satellite phone in my car in the early eighties. It took up most of the trunk of my car, and the antenna was at least six feet long.
