The Christian have framed the question/answer so that if you believe that Jesus is THE Christ, you will be forgiven.
In other words if a rapist/murder was to truly believe ( and throw in - be sorry for their sin ) that Jesus was this ONE CHRIST, they'd be saved.
Sucks, don't it? If you think this is close-minded, look up the rule for divorce.

Some may have a different opinion. I think that the doors to heaven were blocked shut. The sacrifices were not required by God but man thought the killing of the pure animal like unto Abraham who was willing to sacrifice not only a pure lamb but his son. The sacrifice as the angel said was not required.
The faith of Abraham was enough. Jesus represented the pure lamb of God who came to be the last sacrifice. By him excepting spiritually all the sins of the world, it opened the gate to heaven. When this happened all those who were killed before Jesus were taken up with him to heaven.
This does not release of our duty to God and our commitment to master our lives over evil. We are still are responsible for every thought word and deed and our book of life will be opened and we will judge ourselves. God set up the rules. He does not have to judge us. We are guilty or not depending if we broke the Universal laws. Even the Quran says that God rewards those who do good and those who are not believers will burn in hell. The Quran mentions several places that Jesus was a messenger of God and Muslims acceot the Bible as God's Holy Word, yet I don't understand why Muslims cannot except the words of Jesus?

He died for our sins so that we could be forgiven, only if we invite Him into our hearts and accept God as our God and Jesus as our savior. Believe this without doubt and ask forgiveness and be baptized in His name.
That is the only way rapist or killers, anyone can go to heaven and be forgiven. We are all sinners, but Christians know who to go to for their forgiveness. We have been saved through God's grace As believers and followers.

Seasons, did you know that Jesus died for YOU? And why?
Consider this. God is perfect and holy and just. That's God's character which can never change. He would not be perfectly JUST if He allowed even one sin to be ignored. His standard for us is PERFECTION. But everyone on earth is IMPERFECT. That's a problem because even the smallest sin or even ONE sin is enough to separate us from such a HOLY GOD. That includes sins we are not even aware of yet. All have sinned and fallen short of God's standard of perfection.
It's not that He's being mean but sin can not have fellowship with God just as impurities can not remain in gold that is put in a refiners fire.
But there's GOOD NEWS!! God loved us so much He made a way for us to get back to Him.
The wages of sin is death put the FREE GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ who is the visible image of the invisible God.
Our OWN efforts to get to God are futile and hopeless. We have NO power to undo the sins we have already committed. That's why going to heaven has NOTHING to do with being a good person because being GOOD is not the same as being PERFECT. And this is how Christianity is DIFFERENT from every other religion in the world in which people try to get to God by their own efforts.
Here's an example. Suppose three swimmers attempt to swim from the coast of California to Hawaii. One might be a poor swimmer. One might be an average swimmer and one might be the greatest swimmer that ever lived. Despite their greatest efforts the results would be the same. One might get much farther than the others but all of them would fall short of their goal and probably drown in the ocean.
Christ, who was sinless, took our punishment upon himself. He took our place. He soaked up all our past, present and future sins like a sponge. He took our sins and gave us his righteousness. He BECAME sin to save us from the CONSEQUENCES of our sin. He endured the wrath of God upon himself. Sin is the disease and Christ is the cure. When we trust Christ it's as if He has given us a robe of righteousness to cover our sin and God no longer counts our sins against us.
No sin is more powerful than God's grace--even murder and rape.
We are not saved BY good works. We are saved FOR a life of good works.
You must choose to ACCEPT or REJECT God's free gift. That's the choice God has given you. Ask Christ to come into your life and take control. God is ready to welcome you with open arms. He loves you very much and even as you have been reading this answer, He has been waiting patiently to see how you will respond.

Jesus died to pay for Adam's sin
(Romans 5:12) 12 That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned—.
(Romans 5:19) . . .For just as through the disobedience of the one man many were constituted sinners, likewise also through the obedience of the one [person] many will be constituted righteous.
(Matthew 20:28) 28 Just as the Son of man came, not to be ministered to, but to minister and to give his soul a ransom in exchange for many.”
You See Jehovah is a very legal God, he can't break his own laws, he has a civilization of spirit creatures in the heavens & he rules as a God of LOVE, he has the power to kill the sinners, but by Killing ADAM & EVE & SATAN would not have cleared the slanderous charge that Satan brought against him
(Genesis 3:4-5) . . .At this the serpent said to the woman: “YOU positively will not die. 5 For God knows that in the very day of YOUR eating from it YOUR eyes are bound to be opened and YOU are bound to be like God, KNOWING good and bad.”
you see this false claim had to be answered so he has let mankind live under their own rule for thousands of yrs, only to find that every form of government has failed & they are runing the world.
(Revelation 11:18) . . .your own wrath came, and the appointed time for the dead to be judged, and to give [their] reward to your slaves the prophets and to the holy ones and to those fearing your name, the small and the great, and to bring to ruin those ruining the earth. . .
You see very soon the ressurected Jesus Christ will destroy all wickedness from the earth & return it to a paradise

Jesus died for YOU and me, that we may one day be able to pass through the gates of Heaven. He died because of our sins, past, present and future. That we might be washed clean again.
However, we still can and do sin which is why we need to do an examination of conscience and continue asking forgiveness from the Lord on a daily basis
In humility,

Jesus died for our sins because thats what God intended for him to do.
It's really not something we're supposed to question, but just accept. We're not supposed to ask God why.
God has a plan, and we will not always agree or understand, but one day we will.....
Serial killers/ rapists, etc. will not go to Heaven unless they repent to Lord and ask Him to come into their heart....they have to admit they're a sinner and ask forgiveness for their sins.

Jesus died because he pissed of the Jews of the day!
He stopped the money changers from changing money in the temple, a sacred place. According to his blood line (aaron and david), he should have been a military leader who would unite the jews and smite the romans. He rejected such a role and was smote himself.
'The Jesus Papers' was an excellent book, have a read.

Jesus was sentenced to death and by his own free will gave up his life instead of fighting. As for dying for your sins that's very questionable.

Jesus is infinite love. Therefore, He chose to die out of mere love for His creation.
