The salary and demand are based on the market and the supply. The national average salary for a medical assistant is $26,417. Contrary to what has been reported by a previous responder salary surveys in the San Fancisco Bay Area show an average salary of $35,773 with a range of $27,546 to $47,340. Medical assistants do not average over $50,000 in the bay area and that salary would put the person at the 100th percentile. Also understand that anyone making a salary significantly above the average, would generally be highly experienced and perform additional duties for the office in excess of what would normally be seen from an MA.
Another example would be San Antonio a major city with a low cost of living has an average salary of approximately $24,500 for a CMA.

I teach a Medical Assistant program, and I find that students get hired fairly easily, but it depends on how you carry yourself, your work/educational experience, etc...the salary range is from $12-$18 per hour to start and that all depends on WHERE you work...for a specialist, surgeon, multi-physician practice, hospital, etc...Yes, this field is in the top ten highest jobs in demand. It is a good stepping stone and gives you a chance to see if you really want to work in this field. You may even work somewhere that will pay for you to continue your education. Good luck in whatever you do!

I finished my MA clinicals and based on my actions I was offered a job ... To be honest I learned more in these 5 weeks than I did in the 14 months of classes I took ... The office manager told me that I will start at $15 an hr ... I was told that the more letters you have behind your name the more money you make so I plan on getting certified in phlebotomy, ekg etc...

Dont bother with it. I just finished a MA program and it is so hard to find a job. Me nor my friends can find a job. The pay isn't worth it. In my state (PA) you make 12-14 dollars an hr. But with experience you can stand to make up to 18 an hr. Dont listen to the commercials that say they are in demand because they are not. So many ppl are going to school for it so there goes the demand.

They are not supposed to be in such high demand these days (as well as medical billers and coders) as there are so many MA programs out there graduating students thus the field being saturated. If you still would like to go for the training, please don't go for the $10,000 program but instead one from the local county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course). If one has trouble finding a job, at least they won't be so in debt, in the meantime :)

It really depends on where you live. I live in California, Bay Area. And in my county MA's are in demand and make about $50,000/year.
Excuse me....Actually, I am a MA and I work for Santa Clara county. I make $50,000 a year. Dont give up. Keep going to interviews and someone will hire you..
