Yes.. Sony is releasing a $399 40 GB PS3.. October 28th is the rumored street date.. (link below)
The rumor is that it will be bundled with a Blu-ray copy of Spider-Man 3


The date has now been confirmed for November 2 (second link) Also, the 80GB PS3 will be reduced to $500.

Yes, Sony WILL release the 40GB PS3 before the holiday season. Sony will release the 40GB in the US on November 2nd.

Yes, there will be a new 40gb SKU (model) for PS3. It will feature only 2 usb ports (as opposed to the original 4) but still have the same Blu-ray drive, hdmi 1.3 out, etc.

The other downside is that there is no backwards compatability. According to Sony, they think that people are tired of Ps2 games, and play them on ps2 if they still want to play them. Their money, they believe, is better spent on lowering production costs and making PS3 more affordable to average customers.

yes but it is no match for the 60gb with heaps more features and things included, (better off hunting around for the odd 60gb left in stock) it is out now in aus i think
