Sooner or later I've got to switch to a HDTV. Will I still be able to use my DVD player and surround sound amplifier? Will I be able to connect the S-video to a HD television?

Yes, you can still use the S-video. You'll probably get a better picture with COMPONENT video (the Y-Pr-Pb connectors). You can use this connection to send progressive scan video (non-interlaced) which looks somewhat better than standard interlaced video.

yes is the simple answer the switch only is for over the air broadcasting, you see the airwaves are clogged with lots of analogue signals, those signals interfere with important communications, the way i understand it, the switch to digital broadcasting is to free up some space on the airwaves, and give everyone a better picture quality(the standard def that we know today was designed to give a great picture on a 15" tv years and years ago because nothing back then was bigger than that, at least thats what i read), everything else will still work exacty as it did before.

Yes.

All HDTV's accept analog signals (component, Svideo, composite) as well as the new HDMI or DVI connections.

And almost all sources (DVD player, CATV, SAT) offer optical or coaxial-digital outputs which feed your receiver just fine.

I just hooked up a BluRay player and it was having trouble talking through my HDMI switch so I hooked up with SVideo to get into the setup menu.
