By this I mean, can they really send you flying through the air ala Desperado or Once upon a time in Mexico? And just how powerful are they?

Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel did an episode with movie gun myths. No, you won't go flying through the air.

That is a farce. Any gun which can send an assailant flying through the air, will ALSO send you flying though the air, because of the physics law of action/reaction.

Probably you will just fall backwards on you rear and that's it. If your wearing body armor it might kick you back a little more but i doubt you will fly 20 feet in the air.

Lets just say that parts of your body might fly through the air...

The shotgun blast itself is not sufficient to pick up a person and send him flying backwards.

If someone is shot the reaction to the impact and pain of the wound is what makes the person recoil or jump.

Try this neat trick. Arm yourself with a stick pin. Go to the nearest biker bar. Locate the largest guy in the bar. Go up behind him and jab him in the butt with the pin. You will note that the guy will yowl and leap in the air. Certainly it was not the small pin that moved him, it was the shock and pain of the stick. You will also note that, after the biker has beaten to the ground, the kicks from his boots, attached to his 250 - 300 pound body, aren't actually moving your body that much. This is because the velocity and mass of the boot are not enough to overcome the inertia of your limp body.

No one argues with a shotgun, that is real! However the laws of physics say anything that will send someone flying through the air when you hit him will send YOU flying through the air when you fire it! Good hollywood, but not real.

My friend got knocked on his backside when he pulled both triggors on a double barrel 10 gauge with 3 and a half slugs.

Completly unrealistic.

You may fall down from being shot, but you will not fly through the air or even move much.

They tested this on Mythbusters, the answer is no.The shotgun would have to do the same to the shooter, every action has equal or greater reaction(if thats right).

Any person who is shot, with very few if any exceptions will always fall forward, not backwards in real life.*
