What's so contradictory about being told that generally as a single E3 the military prefers to have them in the barracks?
There are ways he can be authorized to live outside of the barracks even when he's that low ranking but they are few and far between. Like if the barracks are full then they start allowing some single service members the option of getting BAH and moving out. But...that's dependent on the command. If your guy is a screw up for them then he's not likely to get permission while if he's a star for them he may. And sometimes people moving out can live in base housing...if it's allowed by the housing rules and there is no waiting list which means that housing is really empty. But even then the rules may not allow you to live in housing with him until you are married.
If the two of you are not married then you being in the area or not being in the area is of no concern to the Army. That's up to you but it won't affect their decision on where to house him.

Just wanted to put in my two cents.. I'm Air Force but I'm pretty sure its the same for each branch, you can't live in base housing unless youre married, and the AF you can move off base if you are an E-4 and above and the dorms are more than 90% full. Anyways, Alaska is expensive! I'm not sure if he is going to Ft Richardson, Ft Greely, or Ft Wainwright... but we are stationed up by Ft Wainwright at the AFB and we live off base and our rent is $1500/mth for a house, the cheapest apts run around $700/ for 2 bdrm. Everything is more expensive up here.. i.e theres no $1/value meal at MickeyDs its a 1.50 and for 2 people to eat there its almost $14 or so... the good thing about AK is there is no tax. So you go to the store and buy 30.00 pair of jeans you pay 30.00.

As an E3 he will live in the barracks with the rest of the junior Soldiers. No on housing, housing is for married Soldiers with families. And no you cannot live with him in the barracks. He would have to request to live in an apartment off base, but would have to pay for it 100% out of his own pocket and Alaska can be very expensive. I know when I was an E3 I barely had money for McDonald's let alone paying rent and utilities on top of it all. Reality check time. Get married and starve together on E3 pay or save up some serious money first.

More than likely, he will not be allowed to move off base. The amount the military would pay would not be considered sufficent to cover the costs. However, the only way to be sure is for him to ask his command once he is there. They will not give him permission to move off base before he even gets there, so he will be in the barracks for at least a few months. However, I would be prepared for him to be told he has to stay in the barracks. The only time they generally let lower ranks move off base is if they are married or the dorms are overcroweded.

No, as a single soldier he will Not be able to get housing, and probably made to live in the barracks..although I do know of a couple E3 buddies of my husbands that Do live off post and are not married. So, that will be up to the Upper Command. But, I can guarantee you he will Not be able to get on post housing or BAH until he is married.

as a single E3 he will not be allowed to live in Military Family housing. Nor will he be eligible to get BAH. as such, he will only be allowed to stay in the Barracks. if he chooses to live elsewhere, it will be out of pocket completely and he will still be required to maintain the barracks room for inspections.
Unless you can find a job that will be able to support an apartment all on your own, don't do it.

No, he will not get housing, but he can spend his own money and get an apartment whereever he wants, although the military will discourage it. The best course of action in this case if you aren't willing to get married is for the two of you to get an apartment off base. The housing office on base will have a list of options that may help you out. But, as an e-3, he may not make enough to pay for an apartment.

Not likely. Most bases will only allow single soldiers BAH (housing allowance) for e-6 and above, and that's only if they don't have room in the barracks. If the barracks are not a certain percent filled then they will not allow it.

It's hard, though I work in command group in my battalion so there are ways around it. If he really wants to live off post tell him to talk to his chain of command about BAS. It's the best route to get if not married. Also even though you have a room in the barracks doesn't mean you have to live in them. It may be different there, but where I'm stationed soldiers have a room but live off post. Just keep the room set as if someone lives in it.
