Fasting six days of Shawwaal after the obligatory fast of Ramadaan is Sunnah Mustahabbah, not waajib. It is recommended for the Muslim to fast six days of Shawwaal, and in this there is great virtue and an immense reward. Whoever fasts these six days will have recorded for him a reward as if he had fasted a whole year, as was reported in a saheeh hadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Abu Ayyoob (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadaan and follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.” (Narrated by Muslim, Abu Dawood, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa’i and Ibn Maajah). http://english.islamway.com/

Many good and saintly Muslims welcomed Ramadan by beginning in the month of Sha'baan itself, which is the month preceeding Ramadan or some people began their fasting on every Thursday and Friday in Sha'baan. Fasting is a long duration worship. In fact one month of continuous fasting (eating at night though) is the longest form of worship a human being can perform in obedience to the Almighty. Denying yourself food and water for the sake of the Almighty is also a form of worship in which your closeness to the Almighty increases substantially, as you realize the value of food and water much more and become indebted to the Almighty in your heart and soul, while giving it up endears you to the Almighty. It is an exercise in getting close to the Lord Most High.

Instead of abruptly stopping the wonderful practice of fasting, the Lord has allowed us to gracefully continue the fasts for a few days more, so that those who have missed their fasts for various reason have a community of people to fast with, among many other reasons some known and some known only to the Almighty or his elite.

I hope this answers your question. May the Almighty bless you for asking the question. Ameen.

let me try to explain this in Arabic as el shiekh Mohammed Metwaly el Sha3rawy did..
he said " el 7asana be 3ashrat amthaleha
six days in shawwal: 6 x 10= 60
30 days of Ramadan: 30 x 10 = 300

so 300 + 60 = 360 days wi da ta2reban el 3am el hegry"

therefore: Whoever fasts these six days after Ramadan will have recorded for him a reward as if he had fasted a whole year

wi Allah A3lam

And also to fill in our shortcomings. When we will be held into account, the first thing we will be asked about is prayers. The virtue of sunnah is if our prayer was not good enough, God looks at the sunnah. Same for fasting.
