A "circle" is can be an unseen or visual circle drawn around the area where you are performing a ritual. To "cast a circle" you are consecrating the area where you'll be doing the ritual to protect it from anything negative entering. Much like a priest purifies the alter before a church service.

Casting a circle is like consecrating an area of space around you to perform ritual or spell work within. The Witche's Creed refers to it saying: "When drawn is the magical circle, by sword or athame of power, its compass between the two worlds lies, in the land of the shades for that hour, the World has no right then to know it, and the World of Beyond will tell naught, the oldest of gods are invoked there, the great work of magic(k) is wrought."

A circle is sort of the "sacred space". One casts a circle for various reasons... rituals, spellwork, protection, etc. It's to create a protected place where you can concentrate and work in peace. After the ritual or whatever, you proceed to banish the circle (this is just common courtesy- it's arrogant to presume the sphere of energy you create just ceases to exist once you stop thinking about it)..

You cast a circle before a ritual to keep evil out and to become separated from the world.

The circle is your 'scared space' , as for what it 'looks like' , that depends on your own imagination.
