That simply means that the person you are talking to is an idiot.

If I believed in God and such, I would think "He" should be the "ULTIMATE" authority. Not some nonsensical book his followers poorly wrote.

Christians are humans. We make mistakes, have incomplete knowledge, get things wrong. God gave us the Bible as a referee to keep us from imposing our mistakes on others in the church. This aids the cause of humility and love, which should be the main attribute of believers worshipping together. Sadly, some have imposed their mistakes with such force that it has been necessary to develop a special doctrine that spells out this role of the Bible. It is called "Sola Scriptura," and it formally identifies the Bible as the highest court of truth for the church. That means that no one can come along with a revelation or an insight and demand that other believers accept it unless it is also a teaching of the Bible. As Paul said, not even a special message brought by an angel from heaven can trump the message we already have in hand from Jesus and the apostles. See Galatians 1:8. It is a beautiful protection God has set around His children, and I for one very much appreciate it.

It means I accept the Bible as the Pinnacle of Truth.
It means that all other ideas are checked against this Ultimate standard. If they do no measure up, then they are garbage.

Why is this Book from God necessary? God says that we have a murdering deceitful enemy who seeks the destruction of the souls of men.

The Bible is the tool that can open the eyes of the blind.

On Yahoo R&S and even in your question there is much spiritual darkness. But hey, a person in the dark cannot tell the difference

It means for a Christian, the Bible is our "rule" book.

If you are not sure what to do as a Christian, we pray for guidance talk to a Pastor or Teacher of the "Word"
or if you are a Pastor or Teacher like I am, you talk to someone you trust to have honest answers and you go to the Bible for the Ultimate clarification on the subject.

No matter what anyone advises or suggests, we should always go with the answer the Bible gives.

The Bible is God's written word. The Ultimate Authority is God and His word is what He says to us today.

It means that mans ideas and religious traditions or belief are not really a guide let alone authority. The Bible should be the beginning and the end to your beliefs- nothing more or nothing less. Whatever it says is good and right- but not always easy or even clearly obvious- we must study to show ourselves approved (2 timothy 2:15).

It means they haven't read their Bible. 1 Timothy 3:15

Edit: You didn't even look up the passage before you gave the thumbs down.
Edit: Kait - they are never in conflict. Truth cannot deny Truth. People say there is a conflict when the Church's interpretation conflicts with their own personal interpretation, but the Holy Spirit guides the Church (John 15:26), so unless one believes that their own interpretation is more valid than that of the Holy Spirit, then Tradition is the authority on the interpretation of the Bible.

It could well mean that they are a LITERAL believer in the Bible as a whole.

Which may or may not be such a hot way to go.

Perhaps the better way is to say "The one true God is the ultimate authority"?

No, the phrase doesn't mean that the Odyssey is historical evidence of Zeus. But the logic behind the phrase is the same kind of logic someone would use when claiming that the Odyssey is historical evidence of Zeus.
