I have posted a question about my cat and was wondering what these are as someone has mentioned them in their answer. And if anyone is from Australia do we call it something else here or do we not have any known cases of it like rabies?

mange and ear mites are both mites. Ear mites live only in the ears, the debris in the ears is dry and flakey when cats have ear mites. Mange is mites that live on the skin and can become over grown. Mange is treated usually with a shampoo or dip. I have no idea what they are called in Australia, contact your vet

Ok. Ear mites are indeed microscopic "mites" that live in the ears and cause a characteristic "coffee ground" discharge in the ears. You can see them if you look really closely at the discharge, but are better seen under a microscope. They are most commonly found in cats.

Mange -- While it is true that SOME mange is contageous, not all of it is. There are two type of "mange" mites. One is called Demodex or Demodectic mange. It is a mite that lives on every dog (much like the mites that live in our eyebrows!). The animal's immune system keeps the population under control. If the immune system should become somewhat depressed, the mite is able to reproduce to a number that may cause hairloss and mild itchiness! This mite is most commonly found in puppies (immature immune system). This mange is NOT contageous to other dogs (they already have it!!)
The other type of mange is called Sarcoptic mange. This mange IS contageous to other dogs. It is much more itchy than Demodex. There is even a tale-tell pinnae-pedal responce that can be elicited from these dogs (If you put their ear-flap between your index finger and your thumb and rub them together, the dog will shake it's back foot like it itches like a dickens!). This mange can be more difficult to treat or control.

Having said all of that. Neither of them can be contageous to humans. ALTHOUGH, sometimes humans can get some general itchiness for a couple of days when in contact with Sarcoptic mange. Humans are not it's natural host, so they cannot survive long while on us! Mange only VERY RARELYL is seen in cats!

Ear mites are tiny infectious organisms resembling microscopic ticks. The mite can just barely be seen as a small white dot with the naked eye but usually must be detected by examination of a sample of ear wax under a microscope. Infection usually produces a characteristic dry black ear discharge commonly said to resemble coffee grounds. .
Mange is a contagious skin condition caused by mites.

im not sure what mange is but earmites are pesky little bugs that live in your kitty's ears and are very annoying, you can often tell if your cat has earmites because the inside of the ear will appear dirty, also the cat will scratch its ears alot, a quick trip to the vet can verify if your cat has earmites and im sure he can tell you what mange is and if your cat has it, earmites are very easy to treat but if you cant afford the vet trip right now, keep the cat away from other animals, earmites are very contagous, make sure you wash your hands very well after handling the cat, humans cant get earmites but another animal can get it from your hands after you touch your cat

ear mites are shitty. my cat had them and all she would do was scratch her ears all day long. if you think your cat has em take it to the vet right away.
