You can have your hymen torn, without ever having sex. A tampon, or even riding on a bicycle they say can do it. I would still consider that person a virgin, even though their hymen has been torn.

So to me, a torn hymen is only a sign that one MAY not be a virgin. It is not the definition of one who is not a virgin. Am I wrong?

We talk about whether men are "virgins" or not - and obviously, the hymen has nothing to do with them! So with a man, he is a virgin if he has never had sex. Why should it be different for a woman?

Does masturbation (with insertion of a toy or whatever) mean you're not a virgin?

And, why is this so confusing?! Why isn't there just one defintion, without all this confusion?

Defining virginity is simple. You can NOT lose your virginity by yourself. Someone else MUST be involved. If someone else is involved and you participate in an activity that has the last name sex (oral, vaginal, anal) then you are no longer a virgin.

I understand that most people don't include oral as a way to lose your virginity. But virginity is akin to innocence and purity. How innocent and pure is someone after they've had someone's genitals in their mouth?

To me this is a straight forward question,

If you have had intercourse with someone then that's that. You're no longer a virgin.

People make a big deal about the hymen (spelling?) thing, and I think it's rediculous because really, people damage it all the time, which might make people think they have had sex when really they haven't. It's too bad women don't have the privacy that men do because it's not a good indicator of whether or not someone has lost their virginity.

When you get into other sexual activity, I suppose the lines get a bit blurred, but as I think it should be known, it's intercourse that determines viginity, nothing else.

Hope that was good..

Someone who has not been penetrated by insertion, the Hymen can be broken by masturbation which is an alternate to Sexual Intercourse but schools rarely teach this.

Sexual Intercourse Educations is the answer not laws. The parent should be the final authority since they love their children and want the best for them.

You are most likely right about everything you've said- however, the meanings of words change sometimes. As it is, the word "virgin" is universally used to say that someone has never had sex before in this day in age. And the fact that the mother of most of the developed world's Messiah is called the "Virgin Mary" doesn't hurt either.

being a "virgin" just means that you've never had sexual relations...that's how boys/men can be virgins same as girls/women...it doesn't mean that the breaking of the hymen makes one NOT a virgin...there is no substitute for real intercourse...so unless you have been with a man sexually, you are a virgin...and unless a man has been with a woman sexually, he is still a virgin...there is no confusion with that...it's cut and dry period...

A virgin is a person who has never had physical sex. This means two people in the room.

A virgin is someone who has not have sex with another person. And I mean penetration all the way. Now if you are just sticking stuff in there well I would condider you as virgin!!

Just keep your back hole virgin and you can say that one of your holes is still a virgin!!!!!

A virgin is someone who hasn't had sexual intercourse.

A virgin over the age of 14 is almost an anomaly.

And yes, I think it's really unfair for men not to have a tell-tell sign of virginity. Maybe that's why they call it a "hymen"---after all, it is saying "hi" for the very first time.

a virgin is someone who simply hasn't had sex. yet in some cultures it might be different, in fact they check to see if your a virgin by seeing if your hymen is torn. they refuse to believe otherwise.

thats a great question but the way i see it women are virgin tell the have sex with someone. men on the other hand i think are not because if they are jacking off and having there fun i would think they would not be. as for the toys i would think and a way you could not be a virgin anymore for the simple fact you are have sex with a toy.
