Shawn B. I like your answer. A higher power does not have to be called God. I want back a looking and a looking for the word God in my question...couldn't seem to find it but that could be because my question is so darned long.

Jacks, a higher power does not necessitate a god figure. As an atheist I recognize nature to be a higher power. I have no control over it, yet it has all control over me.

In much the same way as people go through an entire lifetime NOT believing in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. Equally unbelievable.

The same way as a person who can go an entire lifetime BELIEVING in a HIGHER POWER!! "To each their own" are the words I go by everyday...with so many different people in the world today with so many backgrounds and up bringings it's hard not to accept them all as brothers and sisters....we are all together in this world and have to support each other...what we believe in is irrelevant. :)

Every one believes in a higher power. Not the higher power created by another person or religion.
The atheist cannot Exist if s/he does not believe in the higher power in him/herself.
If there is something not created by humans and is;
Omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient it also lives in the atheist.
It is the matter, will, substance and cause of all creation. So it dwells in the atheist too and does not abandon anyone for any reason - whether you believe in it or not because it is the 'atheist'.
It is unbelievable that humans can be so gullible to believe in something created by man for his own selfishness to dominate and rule other people.

How can a person go through an entire life believing in a higher power they can't prove? That's what puzzles me.

First, I am a Christian and have been for several years.

Second, they are taught to believe the way they do. Even when we do not realize it, we are taught to believe as we do. Many of us like to say I came of this opinion on my own. Not so. We listened to someone, even if unconsciously, we listened or read someone else's idea.

It is as easy to disbelieve as it is to believe. Even though the world has order in it's origin, these people do not care about order.

I can only tell you from an Islamic point of view.
In the Quran, Allah says: These are they who have bartered Guidance for error: But their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction,
Their similitude is that of a man who kindled a fire; when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in utter darkness. So they could not see.
Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path).
Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky: In it are zones of darkness, and thunder and lightning: They press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap, the while they are in terror of death. But Allah is ever round the rejecters of Faith!
The lightning all but snatches away their sight; every time the light (Helps) them, they walk therein, and when the darkness grows on them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could take away their faculty of hearing and seeing; for Allah hath power over all things.

(If you don't really understand the meaning of what was said, email me i'll explain).

I could ask the same question backwards argumentatively speaking. it's their business, what if people who believe in something are wrong and there is actually nothing to believe in? Respect others and they'll respect you
And just in case you're wondering I'm not an Atheist

We all started that way including you. When a higher power presents itself I'm more than open to accepting the proof.

I don't know how old you are but I sense a juvenile naivety in your question. When you get a few more years under your belt, hopefully you'll snap out of your "Matrix" and experience the wider world of wonderful possibilities.
