I've always thought there were 6 climate controls, perhaps you've been taught differently.

LATITUDE

PROXIMITY TO WATER

GEOGRAPHIC POSITION (LAND / OCEAN)
Proximity to a large body of water isn't enough. Prevailing winds determine the influence that body has on local climate

ALTITUDE
Temperature generally decreases with altitude (lapse rate).

OCEAN CURRENTS
Sea-surface temperature influences air temperature as the ocean exchanges heat with the overlying atmosphere. It also influences evaporation rates which are generally higher where sea-surface temperature is higher.

ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
The Earth's average pressure patterns and resulting winds influence climate patterns by advecting temperature and moisture, causing areas of surface convergence and divergence and by influencing midlatitude storm tracks.
