only Linux open source software is safe to download it is tried and tested by the linux community.. you can download linux programs that work under windows including games.
freewares is dangerous, freeware you pay for after 30 days , and most have popup's and adds attached to them....
depending on what you want there are over 27.500 free linux programs some work under windows,,,
and to get an operating system better than windows XP or Vista download any Linux operating system for free.. run the live cd/dvd on your computer from the cd drive without installing it, try all the free software that comes with it
