I have an ear infection, and I was perscribed oral antibiotics last week. I've been taking them for 6 days, but my hearing is still muffled, and I'm still getting discharge from my ear. The last time I had an ear infection, my hearing cleared up right away, but I was also perscribed ear-drops that time. Is it normal that my hearing is still muffled? How long does it normally take to clear? Should I go back and ask my doctor for eardrops?

depends.... discharge from the ear comes from the middle ear whose mucous membrane contains the goblet cell which it turn secretes that discharge,,,

your hearing is muffled because of the disturbed conduction of sound in the mucous filled passage....

I am a medical student doing my ENT presently so i am suprised that your doc prescribed for systemic(oral) antibiotic. Until you had systemic manisfestation of infection like fever i really dont think that oral antibiotic is required. Normally eardrop does the trick.

Now depending whether ure otitis media(ear infection) is acute or chronic the time taken to heal will vary.

i would recommend you to consult your doc once more
