No, it's not a metaphor. There is a book called "Beyond The Birds and The Bees" by Beverly Engle. For even younger children, there is "First Comes Love : All About The Birds And Bees - And Alligators, Possums, And People, Too" by Jennifer Davis. I'm sure there are a lot of other books with similar subject matter as well, just type it into your search engine.

When I was taught about sex and reproduction, I learned first about how different creatures reproduce; plants, insects, birds, frogs, mammals....I couldn't wait to find out about people!
I always assumed "the birds and bees" referred to this naturalistic approach to teaching about sex.

its because birds and bees pollonate flowers to other flowers. the actual flower is the reproductive organs of the plant itself. then the bird and bees are attracted to the pollen and eat it or something and take it to other flowers to pollonate. and thats what humans do, fertilze eachother
