the scripture in galations was part of an epistle written by Paul seeking to curb tendencies in the early church. with communication from the apostles difficult at best, many of the early congregations struggled to remain true to the gospel of Christ. many of the epistles were aimed at specific congregations to keep them away from false teachings and doctrine. What you ignore is the background of Joseph. He attended many churches & denominations, found they contradicted each other in basic doctrine, so after reading James 1:5 which states if any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, Joseph took the scriptures literally and did just that. The answer he received was that all the churches were wrong and had fallen into apostacy. Several years later, Joseph learned of the gold plates and after 4 years of instruction & testing, he received them and translated them through the power of God. These plates were indeed 'lost scripture' having been buried up by a prophet after watching his people die in war. Read them. You will find God there, and an accounting of his dealing with some of his people on the American continent.

As with nearly everything related to J Smith, it was either a lie or a hoax, including the hoaxes placed on Smith (Kinderhook). It's difficult to get hard information regarding the Book of Mormon (except for the absence of evidence), but the Book of Abraham is a real, readable and tangible artifact, and is nothing like Smith said it was.
So, it's unlikely anything else Smith said or claimed is true either.

They're supposed to be another testament, more divinely inspired scripture. Moroni brought Joseph Smith to the site the plates were burried and he translated them. There is an excellent episode of South Park that discusses the whole thing...err.... only if you're not easily offended :)

The ancient inhabitants of the Americas recorded their religious intereactions with God and Christ on metalic plates fashioned out of gold. This writings share of their faith in Christ and of his love toward us. This writings teach of Christ, they preach of Christ and they instruct us about the faith these inhabitants had for Christ.
So in a very real way, these writings are "another testament" of Christ, that supports and clarifies the Bible.
We Mormons call it the Book of Mormon, as Mormon is the name of the ancient prophet who collected all of the writings into one record.

they were scriptures recorded by the prophets in ancient America who testified of Christ and buried their record to preserve their history for a future generation.
The Book of Mormon is a testament of Jesus Christ. That He is the God of the whole World. It's a type for Him and for His coming.

The Golden Plates were plates written long ago, yes they were inspired by God, however they were written in a different language, and Joseph Smith translated them into English.

I've never called him Mr. Smith..and why would you put Mr. if you have the first name anyways??????
and to one of the previous answers...when Nephi killed Laban..it wasn't like he just wanted to kill him..if you look deeper..better one man die than a whole nation die in ignorance...it was focusing on a longer time period than just killing someone and taking something they had..K?
The golden plates were actual..ooo guess...gold plates..with writing on them

Lost scripture, inspired by God. They are called the Book of Mormon because they were edited by a man named Mormon. They were authored by more that 12 seperate men (a fact which has been proven by statistical and literary analysis) all of whom tesified of the Divinity of Jesus Christ, and of Jesus role in each of our personal lives, as well as in their own lives. The angel Moroni merely delivered them to Joseph, who subsequently translated them.
