Sounds like that "something" has some sentimental value to you. There are lots of different ways to help out someone who is less fortunate than you. Give that someone a means to help herself/himself. It will be a gift that will keep on giving.

Want is a lot different to need. I am poor by some people's standards (not my own) but I would not expect someone to give over their designer handbag or clothes just because I can't afford designer stuff. If you know someone who needs food or who needs a coat maybe you can find a way to help them out but you don't need to sacrifice something that has sentimental value to you

You don't give things away just because someone wants them no matter how much money they have or don't have. It's not their right to expect you to do so either. Everyone has to make their own way. It's something different altogether if you want to help someone with less by finding ways to give. There are many ways to give without having someone take from you as if they deserve it.

No, dear one, you don't give your gift away. You should explain to them how special it is, and that you would give it to them if it were not a gift from someone else. Have a good discussion about it. Then one day, you might give him/her a 'special' gift - a gift that means something between the two of you. She'll then understand. Some things words just can't explain. It's all about love........

its not your fault they are poor, so why should you suffer? If this thing is something very important to you, what makes them, or anyone, have the right to take it?

If you have no sentiments about the item, yes. If you do, no. Also, if you sense your generosity would start a habit with the people, no.
