I've washed him, cut the hair away from his butt, but he still gets it stuck on whatever remaining hair there is. How do I correct this without having to shave him like a poodle?

We call them "Cling-ons", and I even shave a "poop-path" in my show shelties to prevent it. Ask a groomer to do so, or to teach you how, or maybe your breeder if they are a reoputable one. The goal is to remove only the hair that runs from the anus to the groin, where the tail lays naturally. That leaves the trousers full and natural. As was mentioned, it could be that the food you are feeding leaves the feces too soft, so you couls add that to the equation. If you need "poop path" carification, e-mail me and I'll draw you a bitmap pic of how I do it.

It sounds like he is producing very soft stools for it to stick that badly.

Did you know that dogs fed on a diet of raw meat, edible bone and offal produce about a third of the waste of a commercially fed dog? This is because the food is able to be fully processed in their carnivore digestive system rather than passed straight through. Not only are the droppings much smaller, they are firmer and smell less too!! This means less stinky mess caught in the coat and it will also help prevent anal gland problems. The firmer poop requires pushing which empties the sacs naturally.

Yet another reason to switch to a more natural carnivore appropriate diet.

I agree with the first post about a change in diet....I don't know what you're feeding, but I've had really good luck with high quality foods that are meat based, with no dyes, no soy, and no ethoxiquin....that could definitely help....then get a pair of clippers and do a little clean up job right around the area in question. Between the two it should help.

I also have a pomeranian, but instead of useing scizzors to cut it short, i just shave it around her butt shorter, it's not completely gone but pretty close. It doesn't look bad, i promise. She doesn't get any around her butt now. I shave it about 2 inches all around it. My pom is a house dog, so i have too. Getting their glands cleaned every few months helps a lot too. Hope this helps.

just have a groomer shave about 1/2 inch around his butt hole and lightly trim right under it that way it doesn't catch on the way from butt to ground. Or you can just trim the "dingle berries" yourself
