Thank you to everyone who answered! You've all given me some wonderful advice and somethings to really think about and consider.
I totally agree, no one enjoys a 'stuffy' affair, especially not my friends and family!
I hate that I can only choose one best answer, but I have given you all thumbs up, and I will look at your own Q's and give you some stars (if they aren't set as private) :o) :o) :o)

Congratulations, on your upcoming marriage. I wish you a long and happy life together.

I just want to pass on a piece of advice given to me, by a dear old family friend, over 35 years ago. (and we're still married)

She said, "Just promise me, dear, that you'll put as much effort into your marriage as you do into the planning of your wedding."

The best weddings I've been to have been informal affairs, where everyone felt relaxed.
Receptions with buffet style food, always allow for plenty of mingling amongst the guests.
My best advice would be to throw away the bridal books. Start, the marriage, how you mean to go on and do things how YOU, as a couple, want it done. Don't be bulldozed into stuff you don't want or like.
I agree with the ladies above, big and flashy is not necessarily better. I suppose you know the acronym KISS.

Looking back over almost 50 years of going to weddings, I have to say that the ones that were the most fun were the least 'stage managed' ones.

The one that stands out in my mind was the couple had it in their back yard, with fairy lights strung through the trees. They live in a lovely part of Melbourne, and back onto a bush reserve, so the setting was just idyllic.

The bridal party dressed vey simply and the attendants were young cousins. There were lots of flowers from their garden.

The parents of the bride and groom each had a candle which they used to light candles held by the bride and groom. The couple then lit a single large candle together, symbolising that their life would be together from then on.

After the candle lighting, the celebrant took them through the legal part of the ceremony and declared them married. It was truly lovely ~ not very long, but very meaningful and romantic!

As a wedding guest, I attend because I want to show my love and support for the couple embarking on their new life together.

I really don't want to see some big extravaganza like a Las Vegas show, or be made to feel cheap because my gift doesn't measure up to expectations.

I'm as happy to go along to a plain old wedding the same as everyone else's, as long as it is to celebrate love and committment, not just a chance to have a big party and get a lot of presents.

Truly, the very best idea is to do what you think will be express the way you and your intended feel about each other, whether that means a backyard barbecue or drinks on the beach at dawn ... your friends and family are there to help you celebrate the beginning of your new life together and to wish you well, and I'm sure most will be delighted with whatever you do.

Cheers :-)

I have been to formal weddings and more formal weddings, but the best wedding I have ever been to was a "cowboy wedding"

All of the bridesmaids were dressed in gingham, the groom and groomsmen were dressed in jeans and boots with the old west coats with tails and white shirts and string ties and cowboy hats. And the bride's dress was made of muslin.

The reception was held outdoors and there were haybails to sit on and the dance floor was covered in hay. The band all dressed cowboy and played hoe down type music. It was so much fun and so relaxed and just the best most comfortable wedding I have ever been to.

That wedding was 24 plus years ago and the marriage is still going strong.

It hasn't happened yet... But will be happening on Christmas Day 2007. MY WEDDING!!
It is going to be GREAT, because no one apart from Andrew (my partner) & I know! It's a huge surprise. We aren't even engaged!
All our families are coming to our house Christmas Day, which is really rare, because we all are spread out over Tasmania. My grandparents & my favourite Uncle & his kids are travelling up from Hobart, I don't usually get to see any of them very much. And of cause Andrew's parents, grandparents and his sisters will be there.
So we have been planning it all by ourselves. Plus to top everything else off I will be over 20 weeks pregnant at Christmas.
I bought our twin 2yo boys these little white tuxes to wear today, they even have little ties! So cute. I only need a pair of shoes each for them.
Okay I am going on now.
I hope you wedding goes off without a hitch, and you both have a lovely life together.
Charli xx
