I've had about a half-dozen T50s, and have yet to find one that works completely correctly.

Look for a T70. Not only are they much more reliable, but are also much more capable, and should cost significantly less than having your T50 repaired. A T70 will use all your same lenses. Back in March, I sold a really nice, clean T70 for $50 on Ebay. You should be able to get one for about the same amount or less.
