I just found out by watching the news that there are 2 elemantry schools here that have had reported cases of MRSA. I think the school district should've sent a letter home to all parents about this. I shouldn't have to hear about it on the news. I constantly remind my daughter to wash her hands after using the bathroom and throughout the day so she doesn't get sick. Do you think the school district should've reported the cases to the parents?

No one of the schools is not the one, but the schools are within a mile of her school. It is just crazy they would withhold that info rather it is her school or not.

You may have the right to be upset, but don't overreact. MRSA is not the boogeyman it was made out to be a few years ago. Yes, it can cause serious infections, but so can lots of other common bacteria. And thinking in the medical community now is that MRSA has become so common it is practically "normal flora"- that is, an organism commonly found on the human body. I work in an environment where MRSA infections are not unusual. A few years ago it was different, but the bacteria is now so widespread that it can turn up in anyone. You are right to teach handwashing practices- that is still your best bet for preventing any infection.

I would definitely be upset if I found out information like that second-hand. A letter should've been sent home.

if it was in your child's school or a chance children from the infected school are interacting with your child's school then, yes they should be telling you. They can send a general letter that there is an outbreak without violating HIPPA because there wouldn't be any identifying information so there is no reason not too.

Yes, I think parents deserve to know when there is a potential threat to their childs health at school. You should contact the school and see why they chose not to inform you about this.

if it was not in your school it is not their responsibility to notify you. if they had a child that was in your child's school with this infection then that is the time to report it to parents. Try going to the office and see how much the office workers do in one day. then complain about something that hasn't happened yet.

It's a violation of the HIPAA laws to give out medical information. They need to be rewritten to make exceptions for minors.

Hell yeah. If your kid could possibly be in danger, you have a right to know about it.
