I'm about to buy a new muzzle loader for hunting and have never used one before. How much practice should I get in using one and how hard are they to operate?

That really depends on what type of Muzzle Loader you wind up buying. Regardless, you should practice as often as you can prior to Hunting season. The operation isn't that difficult, it just requires patience. You also have to get used to the "delay" when you fire a conventional black powder rifle. It's not quite like shooting a center fire rifle with modern ammunition..Practice is essential. Do you have any particular rifle in mind? If you were to tell us it would be easier to answer your question with more specific details......

Love hunting with mine. They are realy easy to load with the use of powder pellets so there is no guesswork in measuring powder. They do take some practice but for the most part are very accurate. Not sure about the disc guns but I would recommend the 209 ignition system. I have never had a missfire. My son had the #11 Ignition system and he had trouble with it not firing since the cap is so much smaller.

They are pretty easy. I got a Knight Disc extreme, .50cal. Video and all to show you how to get set up. Practice as much as you can. I learned a lot as well from www.huntingne.com.
