To the people who had a golden calf as a God he was of course The path. If the metaphor of the Golden calf still worked as a way to reach the inner workings of the human subconscious, we would still have a Golden calf.
However it Got stale. Gods message changed. Today in some faiths the Bible is the Golden Calf. People worship a book instead of God.
Hinduism explains the idea far better than I can.
They are all masks or Mara. They are all attempts using metaphor to described what cannot be told.
The idea is to get past the obstacle that blocks you from God. If the Bible is used as a path then OK if a Golden calf is the path then OK> GOD DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE COLOR OF YOUR BOAT.
Tell me what salt tastes like without using the word salt?
If you can then what you have is a religion. Dont worry about the poetry. Take in the message that reaches your subconcious.

Basically, the Golden Calf was just an idol made by the hands of humans. In other words, "Idol Worship".
The Golden Calf is an assertion of God, who time and time again, asserted His power, and asserting that God Himself was not made by people, but rather, people made him.
The "Golden Calf" worship is happening all the time , particularly in remote villages in remote countries around the world. It might be in the form of another animal, or worshipping a person religiously and firm belief, etc. The "Golden Calf" is a metaphor of human creation.

It is, to Christians. Christians venerate the son, not the FATHER, the calf, not the bull. One should note that BAAL, the 'resurrected' son god of life/fertility of the canaanites was a calf.
Much of the Christian religion also parallels the canaanite mythos and ritual practices. In hosea and Habakkuk, we learn of the 'sons of ephraim'--the Canaanites, they venerated a stick of wood, offered up human sacrifice upon high places--like MT Calvary, used human sacrifice for the forgiveness of sin, and relished in their sin, just as Christians do. Though the canaanites were condemned for such abominations.
One should also note that Ephraim was the son of Joseph, born in the city of Bethel, AND was also referred to as the 'right hand of the father'.
Ecc 1:9 What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

If... but it is not.
God is spirit, we accepts worship in spirit and truth.
The golden calf represents strength but God has other intrisic qualities such as holy, compassionate, merciful and faithful.

Then we're in big trouble. On that note, if a god led me out into the desert to die, I'd probably start worshipping something else, too.

"What if" doesn't change reality.
The reality is that it was an idol, and NOT the one true God.
There is but one true God, and salvation of the eternal soul is thru His Son, Jesus (covenant of the New Testament).
It really IS that simple.
