My cousin is currently working on his bachelor's degree and wants to know if he has to go through the ROTC program or can he just get his bachelor's degree and try to become an officer?

I told him to talk to a recruiter, but the dummy won't listen.

Okay, after he gets his degree and applies for the Officer Candidate School, what happens after that if he gets accepted?

He can enlist and go through OCS. He will need a degree before he enlists

just having a degree is NO guarantee he will be picked up for OCS. what is the degree going to be in? what is his GPA? How old is he? what other skills and qualities does he bring to the table?

generally speaking, the Navy is looking for 3.5 or better GPAs in hard sciences like Engineering and Computer science to be competitive for a slot. Depending on exactly which field he wants to go into, it could be VERY competitive. some communities take less than 100 people period per year, from all commissioning sources.

IF accepted, he will attend OCS in Rhode Island(recently moved from Pensacola FL) for 12 weeks. After that he will be sent to another school which prepares him for the community he is going into. This can be a short few months to years long. Then he will go to the Fleet . where he goes(shore or sea) will depend on the community he is in and their procedures.

he should really talk to the recruiter. after bootcamp, i'm pretty sure he can get onto the officers program. while in the navy, he can finish his bach degree, also.
