Depends upon your budget... but, a dslr would be the type of camera, to start building "gear".... Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Olympus all make good entry level DSLR cameras... with interchangeable lenses and fully automatic and manual features....
When you buy a DSLR, you are buying into a "system" and will be buying that line of camera's lenses and other gear, or gear suitable for that particular camera... go to a site like www.dpreview.com and compare the various entry level dslr cameras, see which is within your budget..... then go to a camera store, (not walmart or best buy) a real camera store, and talk to the sales person, try out each camera you are interested in, and see which fits you best.... entry level cameras range in price from about $600 - $1,000 .... :)

None.
Take some classes in photography first. Use a 35mm all manual film camera, process and print your negatives, learn about light, composition, ISO shutter speeds and f-stops. Learn about photography, then consider a digital camera.
