Yes, according to the visa they have. A tourist visa is valid for 6 months with a further extension of another 6 months. A business visa is only for 3 months but can be extended to 6 months. Check out the website below.

It does indeed depend on what type of visa is involved, assuming you are talking about staying legally. A person could be here on a student visa from high school up to a doctoral program. How long is that? 8 years, maybe more. A person could be here on an H1b work petition for 6 years, take a year off, and come back for another 6. Or they could be here as a seafarer on a crewman's visa for 29 days, etc, etc, etc.

Years if the person does not get caught doing something illegal or if it's female and she has a child in the USA they can't kick her out.
