The first time you save a document it's considered a "Save As" because you need to save it as something because it hasn't been saved before. If you want to make multiple copies of the document after saving it as something or if you want to change the name but save it with edited results, then you should click "Save As" again, otherwise if you're just saving edited results without re-naming it, then click "Save" as it is quicker and more convenient, or for more convenience, hold the Ctrl key and hit the S key to "save", to "save as" hold Ctrl + Shift and press the S key.

When to use save as: when I want to save the document in format other than the default. Also when I want to keep old version of the document while working on the new one.

Save as will create a new document and save it. The old document that you were using as a template is unchanged if the first thing you do is 'save as' when you open it. I use save as a lot at work so I can just use a previous similar document to create my next one.

You use the save as command when you're making another copy of your document and leaving a back-up in case you want to go back to a certain point.

When you want to make a copy of a document with slightly different changes.

Say I have a picture that I like, but I edit it and like that too. I can click save as, and it won't save OVER the old one, and i'll have two different pictures, the original and the edited.

or if you want to save a document as a different format, say from .jpg to .bmp or .doc to .txt, it'll keep the original and make a new one for you.

If you have already saved the file once, clicking save will overwrite that first file. When you click Save As... it allows you to save your document in a different place or save it with a different name.

Save as will give you the option of saving the doc to folder/location of your choice.

Save will just save it to the default location as set by software or that another user might have chosen.

Save as allows you to save a document you might have found rename it and save in same place as original of somewhere else.

whenever you want to save something you just go ahead and save it....each time you go to save a document it will ask you if you want to overwrite the old document....so if you don't want to be losing things I would save after 2 questions or two extra long paragraphs...I'm basically lazy....

When you want to keep the original or save to another location. Some people use docs as templates so would need to use save as to avoid overwriting the template.
