Got to get creative. Find the cause. Is the low from a physical condition or a result of stress or a natural low after a period of extended highs? Watch for when these lows occur then you can find some answers. For example: If you feel blue after the excitement of Christmas or a favorite holiday or summer vacation time being over and the blue blue winter is setting in, plan your own special holiday, to keep the pleasure signals going to your brain...you know?... like stretching the coffee break with a stick of gum. This technique and stratergy gives you small things to look forward to and helps you to go on until you are naturally seeing the sunshine again. If you find yourself getting into deeper depression, get professional help...depression is very debilitating...it really hurts.

will power, no need for drugs. Just say to yourself...ok I'm in a funk, everything I do now is probably the opposite of what I would normally do. So if I don't feel like going out...I go out. If i feel like sleeping...I wake up (unless its 4am LOL)

but you get my drift...if you have already realized that your in a funk, you are only a few steps away from coming out of it

i know exactly how you feel! i get in some kinda funk every few months. this is what i do to get out.
1. i complain for a day. and ask my hubby to tell me nice things and that everything will be ok.
2. then i tell my self to cut the crap. and i look at my goal sheet ( if you have never written out your goals i recomend you doing it)
3. i review my goals all of them personal professional, spiritual ect...
4. i review my plans to accomplish the goals.
5. i go and work the plan.
this works for me. i usually get in funks b/c i feel like i'm a looser b/c i'm not where i think i should be in life ie i shoud already be in med school but me and my dumb behind didn't take all the required courses in undergrad the first time so i'm doing it now. neways. you have to be active in your life to feel better. we all get down at times but we have to keep moving no matter what. as puffy said " Can't nobody hold me down oh no I got to keep on movin' "

I get up take a shower and do something out of the ordinary that is positive. I fall back at least once a week. I look like I have a very healthy normal life, but in reality I have to fight with myself every morning to get up and think, do and feel positive. But the black hole as I call it get me anyway. Keep fighting because if you give in you will loose control and never get back up without medication ( legal killer drugs as I call them)
Oh yeah! smile your brain starts believing your happy at some point. Bet you that made you smile. a little NY humor for you ;-)

Go out on your own walking. Think about the events in your life that keep you low, and try and change things so that these events dont occur. Buy comedy dvd`s so you are able to get the chance to laugh. Talk to people more. Do things to keep the time you have to think too much, especially when you notice your thinking in a sad or negative way, to a minimum.
Good luck

I sometimes find starting a computer project can make me concentrate so that the reason for my depression is forgotten and if what I am doing works out the satisfaction with that takes over.

I suggest VBS because it is not hard to learn and it is included in most windows versions and use it to make microsoft agent projects because it is fun to have a little animated person on screen to boss around and to chat with.

You can find lots of examples and tutorials by searching for 'VBS hey, scripting guy'.

Yeah, I just got out of a funk period myself. I was away in school and just adjusting to new people and it was really tough for me to adjust and i felt as if I was a loner . I met a new girl and it just really helped me out. Whether its a girlfreind or just a freind or someone to talk to it will really help you. Im not really a expert in this field but I thought i should answer this question just because I just got out of a slump myself. Even listening to songs that you used to like back before you got into this perioud can help you too. Best of luck to you.

I tend to write a list of those things that are bothering me and focus on the major ones. I also will make more of an effort to look good (not for others but for me). I find that when I take that time I start feeling better about who I am and in turn start feeling better about the things around me.

Get together with friends, or find something fun to do. If the mood persists, consult a Dr. It could be symptoms of depression, and depression isn't just a matter of feeling low or sad. There's much more to it.

Usually, I focus on improving myself. Having a goal and seeing my progress makes me feel much better! I usually train for a race instead of just jogging for fun. Sometimes I work on eating more healthfully, or on learning something new, or I try to make new friends.

If that doesn't work, I get some antidepressants! Haha.
