Yes. Its called plastic surgery because a lot of the prosthetic implants that they used when it became big were (and still are) plastic. The name just stuck as a result, especially since plastic is associated with things that are fake, phony, etc.

because it stays in one shape. Plastic also has the meaning of "keeps shape memory"
