my pug is due to have puppies any day now. I've done my research and built a whelping box and everything, but this will be the first time I deliver puppies. Right now she is laying in her whelping box and she looks calm, but she is shaking and breathing heavy through her nose, but not panting. How long do you think it will be before she has her puppies?

Shaking is often a symptom of pain. She is getting closer to active labor. Watch her tummy to see if she is having contractions.

You need to take her rectal temperature- you can use a regular digital thermometer. If it's below 100 degrees then she will give birth within 24 hours; however, if she is already nesting in her whelping box and breathing heavily then she should give birth very soon. Make sure she has water next to her because you don't want her to dehydrate.

Make sure you have a heating pad from the pet store to put under the dog bed where the puppies will be because they cannot control their body temperature until around 3 weeks of age. Also, the mom and puppies should see a vet within a week of birth.

The shaking makes me wonder about eclampsia(low blood calcium), I'd try to get her to eat a couple of Tums. Might help raise her calcium in case it's low. Need Calcium for strong labor contractions too. Watch for her pushing. With toy dogs sometimes it's hard to tell when they are actually pushing. If a pup doesn't come out after an hour of hard pushing, think about going to the vet. You can feel if she is contracting. Put your hands on either side of her abdomen below her ribs. You will feel the uterine hornes(there is one on each side) tighten with a contraction then relax when it's over. Keep her warm, offer water. If the shaking gets worse, I'd consider checking with the vet.
Good luck. In a day or so you will be watching those little pups nurse and snuggle up with mom. Very sweet.

I just helped my mom in laws rat terrier deliver her only little puppy this weekend, her first symptoms of labor were also shaking and hard breathing, it was maybe 2-3 hours from the time she started till she had the puppy, but the little guy was stuck and couldn't get out, he came out butt first and got stuck right at his rib cage and wasnt moving, I helped mama though and between the two of us we pulled the little guy out and hes doing great!

Not long. That's about what another dog I used to know did the day before her puppies came.

Good luck!

Take her temp. If its less than 100 it will be around 12 hours. Hope this helps!
