PBUH* is Peace be upon him.
PBUT* is peace be upon them.
It's to respect a Prophet in Islam and all Muslims say either PBUH* or PBUT* when talking or writing one of the Prophet's(PBUT*) names.
PBUH* refers to one Prophet like Prophet Isa(Jesus)(PBUH*).
PBUT* refers to more then one Prophet at a time like Issac, Noah, Solomon, Moses, David, and Muhammad(PBUT*).
Yes even though Prophet Isa(PBUH*) is not dead we still use PBUH* when writing his name or saying his name.

peace be upon him
I'm pretty sure it's a muslim thing to honor religious figures.

Here's a quote: "Muslims traditionally acknowledge respect for Muhammad, Jesus and other prophets (peace be upon them) by adding this phrase or an abbreviation "(pbuh)" after their names. "
That came from the following link.

it's said after mentioning prophet muhammad name, if u say GOD, u say "allmighty" afterwards otherwise it is said u mentioned god`s name in vain... similarly you say "peace be upon him" initials into "PBUH"to show respect to the prophet of islam.

Good question! It depends who you ask, I guess. For example, I've heard:

Police be upon him
P*$$ be upon him
Pedophilic b@$tards United's Hero
Peace be upon him
etc.

:-)
