The large sea planes that were flown back in the 1930's by Pan Am airlines and others, were very expensive to operate and maintain. Modern aircraft technology developed during and after WWII made the big sea planes obsolete, and they were replaced by airplanes that could fly the trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes non-stop.

Smaller float planes are still being used to fly passengers and cargo in Alaska and around the Pacific Northwest on a routine basis.

The Hughes HK-1 flying boat, (Or Spruce Goose) was on display in Long Beach, California for many years, but was purchased by Evergreen Aviation a few years ago, and moved to a new museum in McMinnville, Oregon.

Sea planes, also known as "float planes" have never been banned. Many are still in operation today. They fly between Long beach california and catalina island for example. It's just that they lost popularity. By the "huge one that floats" are you asking about the "spruce goose" that Howard Hughs had built? If so, that is still around, although it was only flown once and then retired to become a tourist attraction.

All the above are good answers. There is a difference between a seaplane and a float plane tho'. A sea plane has a boat type hull whereas a float plane has floats (pontoons). Landings and take offs are a little different between the two.

Sea or float planes have not been banned, in fact there are many of them still in use. The largest of which is the Martin JRM Mars. There is a co. in Western Canada that still flies the only remaining birds of this type. They have been converted into the worlds largest fire bombers. There are also a number of Grumman Widgeon's and Gooses, Consolidated PBY Catalina's, and P5M's in the hands of private owners and used on a routine basis. There are many smaller a/c that have had floats installed and in use in Canada and Alaska. There has even been a C130 and at least one DC3 installed on floats.
