One can practice the techniques and study the literature without paying dues to the Church and rising through the ranks. The Church frowns upon these "rogue" activities. Scientologists of course encourage people to pick up books by Hubbard from the library and to read them on their own, but usually it's then suggested that to fully reap the life altering rewards of Scientology, one must pay for official auditing and courses and tests.

Scientology is lots of courses on things like good communications, better studying habits, fighting peer pressure, getting off drugs, etc etc. Quit abit of it is happening outside of the Church. Like Dianetics. Or organizations like FreeZone which is the scientology being offered without the Church of Scientology.

Its also part of many improvement organizations such as Narconon, Criminon, Applied Scholastics, ABLE the Association for Better Living and Education, Way To Happiness Foundation, World Institution of Scientology Enterprises (WISE) which is scientology in the corporate world.

Even at the church centers most people just take a few courses then leave (like I did) so there really isnt all that much churchiness in the Church of Scientology unless you want to get to the top (think of it like the difference between going to church or wanting to be a cardinal at the vatican)

Same cult. Note how nuts Tom Cuise is...of course, John Travolta is fine but Cruise is not a billboard for Scientology. Also, if you notice, Scinetlogy goes after $$$$; Travolta, Cruise, Presley (Lisa Marie and :Priscilla) and now Cruise is going after David Beckham and his wife to get them to join the cult. The Scientology powers that be must have a pile of dough somewhere. Scientology has NO poor members, I can tell you that!

Uniquely as far as I know, Scientology is a copyrighted religion, which means that the Church can sue people who practice it on their own initiative.

Some Scientologists don't like the directions the Church has taken and they do practice it on their own initiative, but they have to change the terms so as not to get sued.

Who cares, they are both cults, everyone in both are brainwashed and they both have "DC-8's" (except with rockets) carrying aliens over volcanoes. Its sad how someone can be tricked into giving a lot of money for stupid courses trying to convince them to take more expensive courses.
