Instead of drugging the dog to do a human thing to him.. Why don't you just give the dog a raw meaty soup bone from the grocery store once a week. It will provide hours of chewing pleasure. It will scrape his teeth pearly white clean as nature intended for dogs and clean up his breath.
Give your dog a BONE! Make it a real one with lots of raw meat on it.
I promise you this will solve your problems.

There is no need to do this if you use nature's toothbrush, RAW meaty bones. NOT those big shin, knuckle or marrow bones but meaty edible bones. Depending on the size of your dog this could be anything from a chicken drumstick to half a turkey!! The meat will floss the teeth and massage the gums while the edible bones will scrape the plaque and tartar off the teeth.

Our dog (11 months) and three cats (2, 8 and 15) have shiny white teeth with no signs of tartar or periodontal disease. None of them have ever needed their teeth cleaned, either at the vet or with a toothbrush.

Did you know that 80% of dogs have periodontal disease by the age of three? This is caused by eating a constant diet of kibble, tinned or ground food. Periodontal disease can be linked with a compromised immune system and organ failure. By feeding your dog raw meaty bones several times a week (as a meal not a treat) you can prevent this problem.

none that you can use by yourself.I just brush my dogs teeth if they don't like it, to bad.I stand over them holding their heads still.I use dog tooth paste they are outside dogs so I have to keep them extra safe and healthy! Both are boys and one is a black lab and the other an australian kelpie.Good luck with your dogs teeth.do not use human tooth paste, and make sure to give them a bone every once in a while or teeth cleaning bones. If a dogs teeth are healthy then the dog is healthy. You don't have to use a dog toothe brush just buy one of those rubber toothebrushes that slip on your finger it is easier to use if you don't already have one.Good Luck!

They do have tranquilizers for dogs, but that seems a little extreme to just brush his teeth. Don't you think so?! They sale plenty of chew bones, and mouth wash thats specifically made to help fight off bacteria in your dogs mouth.

Actually, I used to work at a vet and I asked about brushing dogs teeth..But the thing is, you're actually not supposed to brush a dog's teeth because the bacteria may be swolled and poison their system.

(the thing is, my dad agrees and is a biotechnician)

If his teeth are that dirty, then you need to schedule an appointment with a vet to have them cleaned and scaled. They will also pull any bad ones, and your dog will have nice, clean teeth and fresh breath, and will be much healthier!

I have two pit bulls and a cocker spaniel and I stand over them, hold their mouths and brush their teeth. Over time they got use to it and don't try to get away. I personally do not agree with using drugs to do this.

Talk to a vet for pills, i wouldn't put him asleep to do it, but they have pills to really really mellow out any pet and it won't mind it's teeth being brushed. just look up a local vet in the phone book and they can prescribe you some pills.

just give the dog a good raw bone or good quality dental chews and let him clean his teeth the way dogs have cleaned their teeth for generations.
