Depends on your belief system to be honest. According to Muslims Islam is the religion that Adam (PBUH) brought from Heaven and passed through the ages via, Abraham (PBUH), Ismail (PBUH), Moses (PBUH), Noah (PBUH), Jesus (PBUH) right through to Muhammad (PBUH).
Non-Muslims will say that it started in Mecca, Saudi Arabia from Muhammad (PBUH).

Muhammad was a nomad who worship the moon god (al-ellah... sound familiar?). They prayed towards the pagan center Kaaba (sound familiar) along with the other minor gods that were kept there.
He lived in a heavily traveled trading route where he heard about Judaism and Christianity. He made a self proclamation that he received messages from and angel that HE was going to be the "next prophet" and used a lot of misunderstandings of Judaism and Christianity to forward his new cult with a book called the Koran. This was not spread by love, sacrifice and joy, but with the sword. He and his bandits proclaimed that if you didn't "submit" to the sword of Allah, then you will die. This is where the TRUE meaning of "Islam" comes from (Islam means to submit). The only reason this cult became popular was because of bloodshed, not of themselves as martyrs of truth, but of innocent people being forced to "submit".

After the Byzantine Empire was spliting in half between the Orthodox and Catholic Church, the Islam religion emerged. Mohammed, who Muslims believe is the last of the prophets, was an orphan who supposedly received a vision from the angel, Gabriel. Islam actually worships the same God as Christians except he is "Allah" which is God in Islam. After Mohammed started preaching, the city of Mecca feared it would lose it's position in the city so Mohammed fled with his followers to Medina. In 622 he took a "hegira," which is a flight, and the turning point for Islam. (Islam actually means "surrender to god") Mohammed returned to Mecca and with the help of the king, wrote the Koran. Essentially, that is when Islam emerged.

Islam started when Sara kicked Hagar out into the dessert because she didn't want Ishmael (Abraham's son by another woman) to interfer with Isaac, her son. So when she had to leave they were sent out into the dessert where Ishmael's decendants became the rulers of Arabia(where it started) and God said he would bless Ishmael which is why still today the Muslims are blessed people. God also said that they would always be at war with Issac's decendants which are the Christians.

Islam is the religion of all the Prophets from Adam to Muhammad(PBUH*). Yes even Jesus(PBUH*) was a Muslim. A Muslim is someone who submits their whole self to God. Jesus(PBUH*) is not a God or a son of God. Jesus(PBUH*) never said he was God. It was Paul who never met Jesus(PBUH*). Islam is the religion that God chose for all mankind. Islam is not a man made religion. Muhammad(PBUH*) did not bring Islam. Muhammad(PBUH*) was the final messenger of God who was sent to show Islam to the pagan Arabs and to perfect Islam in it's final state.

Most non-Muslims think Islam was founded by Prophet Mohammad in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This is totally wrong.
God gave religion Islam to first man and Prophet of his discedents Adam and taught him to teach his sons and grand sons to worship one and only God. Back then instructions were few and simple because humans did not have any background in their memory about belief, religion etc.
Every Prophet that God sent preached the same Islam based on Monothesim. God gave Moses same religion Islam in onl;y 10 commands but later told Moses lots of things that you see in Torah. But later Jews started calling it Judaism. God gave same belief 'Worship only God' to Jesus and Jesus did teach to worship father. He himself worship father (God). And followers started calling their religion Christianity or other people who did not believe on this religion like pagans started calling them Christians meaning those who believe on the teachings of Christ.
On entire planet God sent total of 124000 propphets every where people lived as a society. Every where after hundreds of years people made idols and statues of their Prophets or those who taught them good things to do and worshipping them instead of God. Because it is easier to talk to a statue looking like man than an unseen God.
God never told any Prophet to worship Fire, Stars, Sun or any thing other God. Such religions were created by the people themselves.

muhammed invented islam when he was rejected by both the Jews and the Christians.
It's worth noting that muhammed specifically rejected and denied the divine nature of Jesus, Son of the one true God. In so doind, he also rejected and denied God Himself. Hence, his creation of "allah".

It started in central Asia around Medina. Muhammad had a vision in which the Angel Gabriel told him to spread Allah's word.
