What made you choose a breed or designed cross?

I have a Chihuahua/Australian Terrier hybrid (I.E a 'designer dog'.)

Well, first off allow me to explain a little bit about myself. I am a mutt-girl, all the way. I by far prefer them over purebreds, and when I am looking for a dog or a cat, the first place I go is to the local pound.

I had just lost my other dog, an Australian Shepherd mix, and had decided it was time for me to get another puppy. I had planned on going to the pound later that week to pick one out.

I went into the local pet store (NOT the kind of store that buys from puppy mills, this store allows local breeders to put their puppies in the store for a couple of days so they are more likely to be adopted.) to pick up some food for my cats, and I was looking around at all of the puppies, playing with them like I normally do, not particularly interested at all in getting a puppy there.

I played with the basset hounds for a few minutes, then went over and pet the Papillion, the jack Russels, and the pugs, then I stopped over at the Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes section, and was petting one of the purebreds and one of the Chihuahua/dachshund mixes. I'd hauled my mother with me, since we hadn't had a 'girl's night' in a while, and she pointed out that there was someone trying to get my attention.

I turned around, and there was the ugliest puppy I have ever seen. I kid you not. He was this scrawny little reddish blond thing that had these huge ears, scruffy face, and a little white on the tip of his tail and around his neck, and he was sniffing my hand with his ears back, trying to lick me, wagging his tail so hard he almost fell over, and trying very hard in general to get my attention. I asked the pet store owner (a family friend) if I could pick him up, and as soon as I was holding him, he burrowed into my neck with his tail wagging faster then I’d ever seen a dog's tail move. It was like he was saying 'Alright, I’m comfortable, you're my new mom, take me home now." and I just melted, and I knew that was the right puppy for me. I groused heavily about the four-hundred dollar price tag, (though the pet store owner gave us a 60 dollar discount, so it was more like 340 dollars), and I brought him home, where he fit in wonderfully with my cats and other dog, and has been living happily ever since.

I named him Ty; but most of the time he only responds to ‘Doom’, thanks to the efforts of one of my male friends. His hair got a bit longer, and he grew into his ears, so he is much cuter now, but I would love him even if he still was the ugliest dog I’ve ever seen. :)

I hope that helps!

All dogs at one time were mutts. The AKC recognizes dogs that are useful in different ways. To be recognized a breed must have an acheivable standard which can be obtained relatively easily. The dogs make sense. When you breed a poodle and a lab for instance you get a wide array of results just look at some websites no 2 litters look the same. Since there is not a set standard and because these mixes of dogs don't really harmonize or have a purpose they are considered mutts as far as the AKC is concerned. Plus most people breeding them don't know what they are doing and I think the AKC frowns on backyard breeders.

I bought my samoyed because i wanted to keep their working heritage alive. I spent a long time finding a breeder who bred for working ability and aptitude. Most sam breeders are only concerned with how their dog competes in dog shows and their dogs are never harnessed and used for what the breed was developed for. Although my dog meets the breed conformation standards he would probably not do well in the show ring because his coat is shorter than what people are used to seeing on sammies. On the other hand I don't know of any samoyeds at dog shows who would keep up with mine on a forty mile run. If I found a female sam with the same attitude about working who met the breed standards I would consider breeding. But being a dog show champion would not be enough to qualify a dog for breeding.

I have had mutts, mixed breeds and now a purebred yorkie that was given to us and a purebred Siberian that I got 11 years ago. The Husky I got because I have always thought they were the most beautiful dogs there are, I still do. I wanted one when I was a kid and when I got my own house I looked around until I found him. To this day I still think he is just the coolest looking dog I have ever seen with those beautiful blue eyes and those marking how could you not love him?

I chose to get a purebred dog (Doberman Pincher) because purebreds offer a certain amount of predictability as far a temperament, size, ect. Also getting a purebred from a responsible breeder gives you a certain amount of information on the health of the dogs behind them

I decided to get an American Pit Bull Terrior because that's what I had when I was growing up, and it was such a great dog. He died of old age a few years back. I didn't have to think twice about what my next dog would be.

I just happened upon her at the shelter. She was the sweet one who wasn't barking her head off. I didn't care if she was purebred or not, but I think she is.
