Sponsor is needed on your part to guarantee that you will return to your country after visiting Spain. A bond will be filed and in case you do not return to your country, the bond will be taken by the government.

If you are coming in as a tourist you can stay for 90 days without needing a sponsor; just have a valid passport, return tix, and hotel reservations.
