I countinally black out when I stand up, this happens for about 5-20 seconds and gets really annoying! I am your typical teenager playing the sport of the season, and am in very good shape. Please someone help, I have been to the doctor, and they just tell me to eat more salt, but that doesn't seem to work for me, so please someone I need advice! Thanks!

A very brief period of feeling woosey when standing up is common, and not a problem, but blacking out is not normal. A woosey feeling occurs due to a rapid drop in blood pressure when standing up. When you first stand, it temporarily stops the blood flow to the brain until enough pressure builds up in the legs to push the blood back to the heart. This is called orthostatic hypotension.

There are different causes for this problem, so the solution depends on the cause. If you have chronically-low blood pressure, there isn't too much you can do without medication. Sometimes, the problem occurs when a person has low blood sugar, and it intensifies the effects of low blood pressure - you can figure out if this is the cause if the problem only occurs when your stomach is empty, and eliminate this cause by snacking. Another thing that sometimes works is to flex the muscles in your calves and thighs before you stand, and while you are standing up, and hold your breath as you stand - all of these things raise blood pressure.
